What I know for sure is that I love to look at people… watch them… photograph them… eventually paint them. I am fascinated by the implications of their gestures. I take energy and inspiration from the strangeness and connectedness I find - the contradictions within which we all live. Surface, substance, substrata, interior, exterior and the realms of meaning are my obsession.

내가 확실히 아는 것은 난 사람들을 쳐다보고, 지켜보고, 사진 찍고, 결국에 그리는 걸 좋아한다는 거다. 나는 그들의 제스처의 함축에 열광한다. 난 내가 발견한 에너지와 영감을 낯설움과 유대감, 즉 우리 모두가 살고있는 모순, 이를테면 표면-실체(근본), 인테리어-익스테리어, 의미의 범위가 내가 집착하는 바이다.

I take my photographs home with me and I explore the form and lines and meanings that come with their juxtapositions. I combine them and adjust them and experiment with them. I am most fascinated by what these images lead me to: color and composition, light and line, face and figure and form, texture and space, vectors and relationships… and what it might say about ourselves and our culture.

난 사진을 찍으며 부수적으로 병치되는 형태와 선, 그리고 의미들을 탐구한다. 그것들을 실험하고 조절하며 합치기도 한다. 색, 구성, 빛, 얼굴, 인상, 형태, 택스쳐, 공간, 방향, 관계 등등 또, 우리와 우리들 문화에 관해 말할 수 있는 것들에 깊이 빠져있다.

Ultimately, it is “looking at looking at” that compels me to get involved, mess with the entire culture, fiddle with reality. I love the abstraction of reality that paint invites me to submerge myself in. By the time I get to the studio and begin on a fresh canvas, I know I will paint the perfect painting. There is no doubt in my mind. By anyone else’s standards, it might not be anything like “perfect”, but I cast aside the false codes of perfection that our culture and commerce drowns us in, and I find my own vision, and I am sure of it, and I make it happen. Then I move on to the next one.

궁극적으로, 그건 나에게 강제로 관여하게 하고, 문화 전체를 흔들어 버리고, 현실을 조정하는 "시선 바라보기 (난 이게 더 맞는 번역같다)"이다. 내가 스트디오에 들어서 상쾌한 캔바스위에 시작을 할때, 내가 완벽한 페인팅을 그릴 것을 알고있다. 그건 의심할 바가 없다. 다른이의 표준에 의해 그것은 "완벽"이라 불려지지 않을 수도 있지만, 난 우리의 문화와 우리를 빠져들게 하는 상업화의 완벽이라 불러지는 거짓 코드를 벗어버린다. 그리고 난 내 비전을 발견한다. 난 그걸 확신한다, 그리고 난 현실로 만들어 낸다. 그리고 난 다른걸로 넘어간다.

그는 글을 쓸 시간을 내기 위해 엄격하게 절제하는 생활을 했다. 밤11시경에 글을 쓰기 시작해 새벽 2시나 3시경까지 썻다. 사회적으로 그는 유태인이기에 독일인 사회에서 고립되어 있었고, 유태의 유산으로부터도 소외되어 있었다. 몇몇 친구들만이 인정해 주는 외로운 글쟁이였다.
